Some activities to use with children

* * *

Throughout this chapter we have made suggestions for activities that might be used to enable children to build up their confidence in manipulating numbers through the development of the sense of pattern in numbers. Teachers should take every opportunity to encourage children to identify, to articulate and to use pattern in numbers, supported as much as possible by visual imagery. As we have seen, children can search for patterns in the addition and multiplication tables. They can interpret additions and subtractions with one- and two-digit numbers on a number line and on the hundred square. They can discuss how to use ten-complements and hundred-complements, and how to relate sums to fives and doubles. We also recommend that teachers give time for children to share different ideas for informal methods of doing calculations, whether these be mental, written or a combination of the two. Below we offer a few further suggestions for developing confidence with number through a greater awareness of pattern.
